About the CampaignAS ResourcesAbout CreakyJoints

Learn the basics of back pain and ankylosing spondylitis in our animated series.

Our Backsplaining series explains important ankylosing spondylitis facts, highlights red-flag symptoms, and addresses misconceptions about back pain. If you’ve ever felt misunderstood about your back pain, Backsplaining can help provide fresh insights and answers.

CreakyJoints is a digital community for millions of arthritis patients and caregivers worldwide who seek education, support, advocacy, and patient-centered research. We represent patients through our popular social media channels, our website www.CreakyJoints.org, and the 50-State Network, which includes more than 1,200 trained volunteer patient activists.

As part of the
Global Healthy Living Foundation, CreakyJoints also has a patient-reported outcomes registry called ArthritisPower® with more than 18,000 consented arthritis patients who track their disease while volunteering to participate in longitudinal and observational research. CreakyJoints also publishes the popular “Raising the Voice of Patients” series, which are downloadable patient-centered navigational tools for managing chronic illness. This campaign was created by the nonprofit patient community CreakyJoints to raise awareness for back pain and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a type of inflammatory arthritis that frequently goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Inflammatory back pain diseases like ankylosing spondylitis can take years to properly diagnose. We hope that our three distinct video series inspire people living with chronic back pain to take a closer look at their symptoms and talk to their doctor.

The videos in this campaign were produced with support from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

The Joint Task Force is on a mission to solve the mystery of a young woman’s back pain and other bizarre symptoms.

My Back Is Killing Me is a “fictional” series about a detective and police officer duo trying to crack the case about a woman’s mysterious back pain. The detective and police officer are played by actors, but the patients in the series are not : They actually have ankylosing spondylitis, and the plot is based on their real-life experiences.

My Backstory

Patients share their journey to getting diagnosed and adjusting to life with ankylosing spondylitis.

My Backstory features three people with different patient journeys. They share what it was like to get diagnosed and what life is like with AS.

  • Jed Finley: Even though Jed was diagnosed as a tween, he didn’t take his AS symptoms seriously until his pain was out of control. Watch his story.
  • Roselyn Tolliver: Despite both her father and brother having AS, Roselyn was misdiagnosed with other diseases for decades. Watch her story.
  • Hannah Moskowitz: With symptoms that weren’t textbook for AS, Hannah bounced from doctor to doctor before getting diagnosed. Watch her story.
  • Fardina Malik, MD: As a bonus episode, Dr. Malik shares what it’s like to see symptoms of AS, why it’s misdiagnosed in women, and how the right treatment can make a difference. Learn more
